Looking before watering
The surface of the soil tells only part of the story. Check a little deeper and lift the pot; its weight is often a better guide than a date on the calendar.
An afternoon in the shade
Watch where the shadows fall as the season changes. A corner that was bright in spring may offer shelter in summer, with no work needed beyond moving a pot.
